Summary

By preference I use the title Technical Designer. My background as a Programmer & Designer mesh well with my creative, dramatic and art hobbies to let me bridge different skill areas.

A wide and varied collection of interests and experience has strongly benefited my work. I welcome any opportunity and challenge to expand and improve my skill-set. I have researched new solutions in procedural content generation, touch interfaces, motion controllers, AI, and dialogue systems.

My interests include the advent of new technologies or doing new things with old technologies whether implementing new input methods, business models or changing how characters interact in a game.

Employment History

Lead Designer Jagex September 2010 - Present

I joined GameLabs in Jagex to develop new IP, investigate new tech and platform opportunities. Shortly after joining I was asked to reboot and finish 8Realms, the companies first foray into Microtransactions. In the absence of a Lead Developer for several months I served to informally assist the team Producer with managing development. I've also worked closely with marketing and stepped in as temporary producer during our producers extended absence.

With the assistance of my Producer we have, introduced Agile to company, spearheaded the introduction of modern project management software and wiki style documentation. I've also worked closely with our BI team to develop in-depth Analytics, and feedback based design.

Programmer and Designer Mere Mortals March 2008 - September 2010

The largest part of my time was spent on Encleverment Experiment. I've played a large role in restructuring project management, and formalising process. Worked on internal IP projects, concepts and pitches. I designed, prototyped and lead the first original IP for the company, Glo.

Glo: An Adventure into the Light

  • Position: Lead Designer
  • Developer: Mere-Mortals
  • Publisher: Mere-Mortals
  • Platforms: Bada
  • Released: June, 2010

Glo is a relaxing light based puzzle game, focusing on providing a beautiful experience.

I took two animactics, a bag of concepts and went off and made the prototype on the iPhone. This involved engineering the iPhone tech, game prototype and building a level editor. After some initial interest at some conferences it was decided to move it to Samsung Bada and move into full production.

This is the first internal IP Mere-Mortals have launched, and was a launch title for Samsung Bada platform.

The feel was the most important thing to polish and maintain. Level flow was key to the experience. I spent a great deal of time designing, and polishing the levels to satisfaction. I have to bow to the art team they did a really fab job on this one.

Encleverment Experiment

  • Position: Lead Programmer
  • Developer: Mere-Mortals
  • Publisher: Blitz Arcade
  • Platforms: XBLA
  • Released: November, 2009

A family quiz game it really shone in multiplayer. I love the mascots, my favourite was Demon Panda.

Key areas I addressed were the code structure, networking, and procedural content generation.

This was a project that exploded in many ways in scale and scope. This project taught me much about production, deliverables and working within resources. It was great working with Blitz who were really open communicators. It's thanks to this project I found my passion for design.
